More Information

The Hardy J tomato plant is an annual, heirloom, open pollinated variety of Solanum lycopersicum (tomato plant) that should be planted when at least 8 inches tall. It is important that you do not plant nightshades in the same location each year. Tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant are all nightshades. If planting when 8-12 inches tall, plant to almost bottom branches; if plant is over 1 foot tall, remove the bottom branches with a sharp blade or pruners and plant up to where the branches were, or slightly higher.

Dig holes for planting twice the width of the pot. If your plant came in a biodegradable pot, click here for biodegradable pot instructions. The Hardy J tomato plant should be planted in moist soil; it will have higher yield in loamy soil, but should be fine in most good quality soil. Unless your soil already has fertilizer, use a small amount of tomato or all purpose fruit and vegetable fertilizer at time of planting. Begin fertilizing according to package instructions once plant is established.
